★How to Read This Guide /

A rule, a framework, a shortcut, and an ethical boundary are not the same thing.

English

This revision was checked against the two MAST 2026 slide decks and the complete local reading library. It does not erase the instructor’s strong opinions; it labels them accurately and places them beside competing traditions.

  • Convention: a broadly taught solution that usually protects clarity.
  • Framework: one author’s useful model, not a law of nature.
  • Heuristic: a memorable shortcut for beginners; test it against footage.
  • Creative option: one expressive choice among alternatives.
  • Ethical boundary: especially in documentary, a limit that cannot be excused as “style.”

Audit of the 2026 slides / 2026

Keep and strengthen /

  • Plan before expensive production /
  • Story, action, and sound matter more than gear /
  • Coverage, Five Shots, close sound, backups /
  • Paper edit for language-heavy work / 对话密集项目先做 Paper Edit
  • Emotion and attention outrank mechanical continuity /
  • Practice through demonstrations and reverse engineering /

Reframe rather than repeat /

  • “Cinema = CU” is a provocation, not a definition / “电影=特写”是暴论,不是定义
  • “Never move the camera” is a beginner constraint, not a style law / “绝不运动”是训练限制,不是风格定律
  • “Always J-cut” is a useful test, not a universal answer / “永远 J Cut”是测试问题,不是唯一答案
  • A hold after dialogue does not automatically create a liar or villain /
  • Cut-on-action and nodal cutting are alternatives, not enemies /
  • There may be a strongest cut point, but not always one metaphysically unique frame /

A–ZComplete Technique Atlas /

194 bilingual entries across lighting, sound, shooting, effects, editing, and workflow.

Film terms overlap. “Crane” is a support and movement; “lens flare” can be accident, lighting choice, or effect; “bullet time” is usually capture plus post; “long take” is both a shooting and editing decision. Learn the relationship, not only the label.
Lighting 照明18

Lighting terms describe source role, quality, contrast, style, or visible optical result. These categories overlap.

Key light 主光

The principal light that establishes the subject’s dominant direction, modeling, and exposure relationship.

Creates the primary visual statement; it need not be the brightest lamp.

Watch / 注意: Do not confuse “key” with a fixed fixture position.

Fill light 补光

Light that controls the density and detail of shadows created by the key.

Adjusts contrast and perceived softness.

Watch / 注意: Fill may be a lamp, bounce, ambient light, or negative fill used in reverse.

Background light 背景光

Light aimed primarily at the set or background rather than the subject.

Separates subject from setting and shapes depth, color, and texture.

Watch / 注意: Avoid unwanted spill that flattens foreground contrast.

Back / rim / separation light

Light from behind or behind-side that outlines hair, shoulders, or edges.

Separates overlapping forms and adds depth.

Watch / 注意: A bright rim can look artificial unless motivated by the world.

Cameo lighting

A highly selective theatrical style that isolates a bright subject against a very dark or unlit background.

Portraits, confession, mystery, or stage-like emphasis.

Watch / 注意: Can erase environmental information and feel overtly staged.

Floodlight

A broad, generally unfocused source designed to cover a wide area.

Base ambience, backgrounds, large sets, or stage washes.

Watch / 注意: Broad coverage does not automatically mean soft light; apparent size and diffusion matter.

High-key lighting

A low-contrast lighting approach with abundant fill and relatively few deep shadows.

Comedy, beauty, commercials, institutional clarity, or deliberately clinical spaces.

Watch / 注意: “High-key” describes contrast relationships, not merely a bright exposure.

Low-key lighting

A high-contrast approach that allows large dark areas and selective illumination.

Suspense, noir, secrecy, isolation, or sculptural form.

Watch / 注意: Underexposure alone is not thoughtful low-key lighting.

Mood lighting

Lighting designed primarily to establish emotional atmosphere through contrast, color, direction, and texture.

Supports genre, psychology, place, or subjective experience.

Watch / 注意: Mood should still preserve story priorities and usable skin/object detail when required.

Rembrandt lighting

A portrait pattern in which the shadow-side cheek retains a small triangle of light beneath the eye.

Classical dimensional portraiture with controlled drama.

Watch / 注意: It is a pattern, not proof of artistic quality; face shape and blocking may change it.

Stage lighting

A system of positioned, controlled, and often cued fixtures serving performance visibility, modeling, color, and spectacle.

Live performance, multicamera shows, museums, events, and stylized film sets.

Watch / 注意: Film cameras may reveal color, flicker, or contrast differently from a live audience.

Soft light 柔光

Light with gradual shadow-edge transitions, usually produced by a large apparent source close to the subject.

Faces, wraparound modeling, natural windows, beauty, and gentle ambience.

Watch / 注意: Softness is about apparent source size, not simply adding diffusion.

Hard light 硬光

Light with crisp shadow edges, produced by a small apparent source or distant point-like source.

Sunlight effects, graphic shadows, texture, tension, and precise control.

Watch / 注意: Hard light exposes placement errors and can create distracting multiple shadows.

Practical light

A visible lamp, screen, candle, sign, or fixture that belongs to the scene.

Motivates off-camera lighting and enriches production design.

Watch / 注意: Visible practicals often need dimming, replacement bulbs, diffusion, or hidden reinforcement.

Motivated lighting

Designed light that appears to come from believable sources within the story world.

Maintains realism while preserving control.

Watch / 注意: Motivation can be expressive rather than physically exact.

Negative fill 负补光

Black material or controlled absence of light used to deepen shadows and restore contrast.

Useful in white rooms, overcast exteriors, and uncontrolled bounce.

Watch / 注意: It removes light; it is not a lamp.

Lens flare

Scattered internal lens reflections caused by strong light entering or striking the lens.

Can imply glare, heat, immediacy, memory, or optical presence.

Watch / 注意: Can reduce contrast or obscure information; flag the lens when unwanted.

Lighting effect

A programmed or physical change such as flicker, lightning, firelight, police strobes, moving shadows, or color animation.

Simulates off-screen events and dynamic environments.

Watch / 注意: Strobes and flicker require exposure, refresh-rate, and health/safety checks.

Sound 声音17

Diegetic status, recording method, editorial function, and postproduction craft are different dimensions.

Diegetic sound

Sound understood to originate within the story world, whether or not its source is visible.

Builds space, causality, realism, and point of audition.

Watch / 注意: Off-screen does not mean non-diegetic.

Non-diegetic sound

Sound presented outside the characters’ story world, such as most score or external narration.

Commentary, structure, irony, and emotional shaping.

Watch / 注意: Boundaries can shift when music or narration is later revealed as diegetic.

Spoken language laid over images; it may be external, first-person, essayistic, or a character’s thought.

Compresses context, argument, memory, and inaccessible information.

Watch / 注意: Do not make narration merely describe what the picture already proves.

Film score

Music composed or selected to function as part of the film’s expressive design.

Shapes expectation, pace, scale, motif, emotion, and structure.

Watch / 注意: Temp music can narrow invention and create attachment to unavailable rights.

Source music

Music heard as coming from a radio, band, phone, club, or other source in the story world.

Establishes time, place, culture, and character.

Watch / 注意: A mix may move between realistic source perspective and expressive prominence.

Sound effect (SFX) 音效

A recorded, designed, synthesized, or library sound used to represent or transform an event.

Clarifies action, enlarges scale, creates worlds, and directs attention.

Watch / 注意: “Realistic” effects are often layered constructions.

Production / sync sound

Sound recorded in time with the photographed action.

Preserves performance and location texture.

Watch / 注意: Synchronization does not guarantee intelligibility or low noise.

Room tone

A recording of a location’s apparently quiet background, made for editorial continuity.

Fills gaps and smooths dialogue edits.

Watch / 注意: Record long enough for variation; a tiny loop becomes audible.

Ambience / atmosphere

The broader sonic bed that defines place, distance, time, weather, and activity.

Makes cuts feel spatially coherent and alive.

Watch / 注意: Ambience should change perspective when the camera or location changes.

Wild track / wild sound 单录声

Location sound recorded separately from synchronized picture.

Clean machinery, crowds, doors, traffic, or specific actions for post.

Watch / 注意: Log what was recorded and its microphone perspective.

Foley 拟音

Performed sounds recorded in synchronization with picture, especially footsteps, cloth, and prop handling.

Restores detail, control, and character after production.

Watch / 注意: Foley is not simply any sound effect.

Dialogue rerecorded after production while matching timing and performance.

Repairs noise, changes lines, or improves clarity.

Watch / 注意: Poor acoustics or performance matching can make ADR feel detached.

Sound bridge

Sound that continues across a picture edit or scene boundary.

Connects time, place, idea, or emotional flow.

Watch / 注意: The bridge may preserve continuity or deliberately create irony.

Prelap

Incoming sound begins before the image associated with it appears.

Creates anticipation and leads the audience into the next scene.

Watch / 注意: Often overlaps with the idea of a J-cut; terminology varies by workflow.

J-cut J

The next shot’s audio starts before its picture edit.

Leads attention, softens transitions, and introduces unseen space.

Watch / 注意: Not automatically better than a hard cut or picture-first reveal.

L-cut L

The outgoing shot’s audio continues after the picture changes.

Lets us watch reactions, evidence, memory, or consequence while preserving speech.

Watch / 注意: Long overlaps can confuse source or chronology if perspective is unclear.

Silence / reduced sound

The deliberate removal or thinning of expected sound.

Concentrates attention, marks shock, subjectivity, awe, or isolation.

Watch / 注意: Digital zero and dramatically perceived silence are not the same.

Focal length changes during the shot, altering field of view and magnification without moving the camera.

Reframes, reveals, emphasizes, or creates a period/style signature.

Watch / 注意: Perspective does not change unless camera position changes.

Prime lens

A lens with one focal length.

Often compact, fast, consistent, and discipline-inducing.

Watch / 注意: “Prime” does not automatically mean sharper or more cinematic.

Wide-angle lens

A short focal length gives a wide field of view and, from close positions, exaggerates spatial relationships.

Immersion, environment, energetic movement, and foreground emphasis.

Watch / 注意: Close faces and edges may distort strongly.

Editing generates meaning through the construction, rhythm, and collision of shots rather than merely preserving continuity.

Emotion, politics, argument, abstraction, and dynamic form.

Watch / 注意: Pudovkin, Eisenstein, Vertov, and others proposed different—not identical—models.

Post-classical editing

Contemporary mainstream editing often intensifies classical continuity through faster cutting, mobile cameras, close framings, sound bridges, and spatial compression.

Energy and accessibility while retaining narrative orientation.

Watch / 注意: The label is broad and debated; not all modern films share one style.

In-camera editing

Shots are recorded in intended sequence and duration so little or no later picture editing is needed.

Teaching continuity, rapid turnaround, analog discipline, live performance.

Watch / 注意: Mistakes may force retakes; sound and finishing may still need post.

Linear video editing

Material is copied sequentially from source to record medium; later changes may require re-editing everything after the change.

Historical tape workflows and some simple live/assemble operations.

Watch / 注意: Generation loss and inflexibility shaped the craft.

Non-linear editing (NLE)

Digital clips can be accessed and rearranged in any order without physically altering source media.

Modern editorial iteration, versions, effects, and media management.

Watch / 注意: Freedom increases the need for organization, backups, and decision discipline.

Video editing software

An application for organizing, cutting, layering, mixing, finishing, and exporting moving-image media.

Implements editorial operations and workflows.

Watch / 注意: Software features change; concepts transfer across tools.

Offline editing

Creative editorial is performed with proxies or lower-bandwidth media before conforming to high-quality originals.

Speed, storage efficiency, collaboration, and remote workflows.

Watch / 注意: Preserve metadata, timecode, frame rate, reel/camera IDs, and effects for conform.

Online editing / conform

The approved edit is rebuilt or relinked to high-quality originals for final VFX, color, titles, and delivery.

Finishing and master creation.

Watch / 注意: Check every edit, speed change, resize, composite, color transform, and audio sync.

Real-time editing

Systems perform switching, playback, effects, or output without waiting for pre-rendering, often during live production.

Broadcast, events, multicam, and rapid turnaround.

Watch / 注意: Real-time performance depends on format, hardware, network, and effect complexity.

Vision mixing / live switching

A vision mixer selects and combines live camera, playback, key, graphic, and transition sources.

Live television, concerts, sports, classes, and streamed events.

Watch / 注意: Preview/program discipline, comms, tally, sync, and recording isolated feeds are central.

Multicam editing

Synchronized camera angles are grouped so the editor can switch views while preserving a common performance timeline.

Interviews, music, comedy, events, and action.

Watch / 注意: Sync first; then cut for story, not simply to use every angle.

Video editing

The craft and process of selecting, arranging, combining, and finishing recorded picture and sound.

Creates structure, performance, rhythm, information flow, and final deliverables.

Watch / 注意: It includes creative decisions and media engineering; software operation alone is not editing.

The relationship between shots is the real language.

English

Filmmaking controls seven things: information, attention, emotion, time, space, point of view, and rhythm. A shot is not valuable merely because it is beautiful; it is valuable because of what it makes the next shot mean.

  • Where are we?
  • Who is present?
  • What are they doing?
  • Why does it matter?
  • What changes?
  • Who reacts?

Class provocation / 课堂暴论: “Cinema is close-up.” A feature film is not literally made only of close-ups; the point is that cinema can direct attention to a face or detail with extraordinary force. Earn the close-up—do not spend it casually.
Another provocation / 另一个暴论: “Do not write a movie with random footage.” Plan the question, action, and evidence before shooting—but leave room for discovery, especially in documentary.
Close-ups, coverage, and invisible cutting are not cinema’s essence. Wide staging, long takes, off-screen space, discontinuity, and ambiguity are equally legitimate grammars. The real question is not “Which rule is correct?” but “What experience does this form create?”

Write, draw, schedule, and pre-edit before the camera rolls.

1. Standard screenplay as a production map /

English

A conventional U.S. screenplay uses 12-point Courier, a left page margin of about 1.5 inches, and recognizable positions for scene headings, action, character names, dialogue, parentheticals, and transitions. A useful classroom ruler is 1.5 / 2.5 / 3.5 / 5.5 inches as approximate tab landmarks—not four universal margins.

Why format matters: the page immediately reveals the proportion of scene description, action, and dialogue. The rough “one page ≈ one screen minute” heuristic becomes possible because the typography is controlled, though performance and action can change the result.

2. Planning formats /

Screenplay / 剧本

Best for scene, action, performance, and dialogue.

Storyboard / 分镜

Best for composition, blocking, camera position, and transitions. Drawing skill is irrelevant; clarity matters.

Slides / PowerPoint

One slide per beat, scene, shot, or evidence item. Useful for pitching and visually arranging a sequence.

Spreadsheet / 表格

Track scene, contributor, location, claim, needed B-roll, rights, status, and timecode.

Shot list /

Convert story needs into recordable images: shot size, angle, movement, sound, and priority.

Paper timeline /

Draw V1, A1, A2; place sound bites, narration, natural sound, music, and B-roll before opening the editor.

3. Paper edit for dialogue-heavy work / 对话密集型项目用 Paper Edit

English

For interviews, current-affairs documentaries, and podcasts, transcribe first. Mark speaker, timecode, source file, topic, factual claim, emotional beat, and possible image. Assemble the argument on paper before refining picture. This is not “less cinematic”; it prevents the timeline from becoming a search engine.

02Story Structure /

A sequence is not a pile of shots; it is a change over time.

Wow → Pirate → Star → Arc → Conclusion

This five-part wording comes from the instructor’s notes. Treat it as a practical classroom scaffold rather than a universally standardized formula.
WOW — Hook / 钩子
Open with the most surprising image, sound, question, contradiction, or consequence.
PIRATE — Quest, problem, or treasure /
What does the character seek? What is missing, threatened, hidden, stolen, or difficult to obtain?
STAR — Person at the center /
Give the story a human face, desire, voice, and point of view.
ARC — Escalation and change /
Complication, attempt, reversal, discovery, decision, and consequence. Each beat should alter the situation.
CONCLUSION — Meaning /
Resolve the central question, reveal the cost, or leave the audience with a productive final question.
English

For a short report, each part can be built as its own five-shot sequence. An interview can provide compressed information as voice-over while the images show process, evidence, place, and consequence. Do not let talking heads merely repeat what the audience can already see.

Story units: beat → scene → sequence /

Unit / 单位Working question / 工作问题What must change?
What action meets what reaction?
Who wants what, from whom, now—and what blocks it? A value or relationship turns / 价值或关系发生转折
Sequence / 段落What larger attempt develops across several scenes? The situation escalates or reverses / 局面升级或逆转
Story / 故事What pressure forces irreversible choice?
Objective → obstacle → tactic → turn → aftermath. If nothing changes, the scene may be exposition, atmosphere, setup—or unnecessary. Those first three can be valid, but name the function honestly.
Three acts, Hero’s Journey, McKee’s value change, and “Wow–Pirate–Star–Arc–Conclusion” are diagnostic lenses. Use the one that reveals your material; do not force every film to impersonate the same plot.

ECU Extreme Close-Up / 极特写

Eyes, lips, fingertip, switch, key. Suspense, abstraction, extreme emphasis.

Make a meaningful change in shot size. WS → MS → CU reads clearly; MS → slightly tighter MS may feel like a mistake unless it is a deliberate jump cut.

Special-purpose shots /

Establishing Shot /
Introduces place, time, geography, or social context.
Master Shot /
Records the complete scene and blocking from a usable angle.

Links two people spatially while emphasizing one of them.
Shows approximately what a character sees. An OTS may feel subjective, but it is not automatically a strict POV.
Reaction /
Shows how a person receives an event; often carries more emotion than the speaker.

Six dimensions of a shot /

Proximity / 距离

Shot size regulates access, intimacy, and context.

Angle / 角度

Lens & depth /

Perspective, scale, focus, foreground, middle ground, and background direct attention.

Light & color / 光与色

Visibility is only the beginning; contrast and color create hierarchy and atmosphere.

Movement / 运动

Subject movement, camera movement, and movement within depth may cooperate or conflict.

Duration / 时长

A shot’s meaning changes as the audience discovers, waits, predicts, or becomes uncomfortable.

Give the editor choices, not duplicates.

1. The basic coverage ladder /

EST MASTER WS MS CU INSERT REACTION

English

Coverage is the collection of angles and shot sizes that allows a scene to be rebuilt. A safe conversation package might include establishing shot, master, two-shot, OTS on both sides, clean singles, close-ups, inserts, reactions, entrances, exits, and room tone.

Good coverage is designed around the scene’s turning point. Ask: whose scene is it, who changes, and which reaction must be visible?

2. Michael Rosenblum / BBC Five Essential Shots

CU on action /
What is happening?
CU on face /
Who is doing it, and how do they feel?
Wide or two-shot /
Where is it happening, and how do person and action relate?
OTS / Over the shoulder / 过肩
How does the work appear from near the subject’s viewpoint?
Creative “art” shot /
Find an angle where an ordinary observer would not place an eye.
Clean the lens. Hold the phone still. Record each setup for roughly ten seconds. Begin before the action and continue after it. “Ten seconds” is a training habit, not a law.

3. “Shoot where it’s not” and “Let them leave”

English

Shoot where it’s not: anticipate. Frame the empty doorway, handle, chair, switch, or destination and wait for the action to enter. Do not chase what has already happened.

Let them leave: when a subject exits, hold the frame instead of automatically panning after them. An empty frame creates a question—where did they go?—and often provides a clean edit point.

Start on the switch. A hand enters. Once the finger commits and the outcome becomes inevitable, you may cut elsewhere—perhaps to the room illuminating—rather than spending the whole action in one predictable view.

4. Inserts, cutaways, and B-roll /

Insert /

A closer detail inside the principal action: hand turns dial; plate meets table; text message appears. Match movement when continuity matters.

Cutaway /

Temporarily leaves the principal action for a listener, clock, audience, weather, environment, or consequence.

B-roll /

Supplemental footage used over interviews or narration. Strong B-roll adds evidence, process, contradiction, atmosphere, or consequence—not wallpaper.

Insert day / 补拍日

Some productions reserve time for missing details and inserts. For interviews, review the transcript, then return for specific B-roll that answers what was said.

Michael Rosenblum, iPhone Millionaire; BBC Five Essential Shots as used in the MAST slides; Bowen, Grammar of the Shot, “Will It Cut?”; Mackendrick, On Film-making, “Camera Coverage” and “Shot-to-Shot Relationships.”

05Space, Eyelines & Continuity /

Clarity first; disorientation only by choice.

English

Keep cameras on one side of the line connecting the subjects or following the direction of travel. This preserves left/right relationships, matching looks, and travel direction.

Cross deliberately by showing the camera move across, using a neutral shot on the line, following a character across, or presenting a new master that re-establishes geography.

2. Rule of 30 / 30 度原则

English

When cutting between views of the same subject, move the camera by roughly 30 degrees or more and preferably change shot size. Human vision notices tiny discontinuities inside nearly identical images; a decisive angle change is easier to accept as a new viewpoint.

3. Composition and eyeline /

Lead room /

Person on left looking right: [ >    ]. Leave room in front of the gaze.

Short-side look /

Person on right looking right: [    > ]. Looking into the near edge can create pressure, secrecy, hostility, or confinement—but meaning depends on context.

Eye-line match /

For equal status, keep eye heights and look angles plausibly symmetrical. Power differences may be created by height, angle, lens, distance, and cutting pattern.

Fixed interview gaze /

The contributor should normally look consistently at one interviewer. Wandering between interviewer, crew, monitor, and lens produces unstable eyelines.

Looking up, down, sideways, or holding after a line can make a person seem evasive or threatening—but no framing automatically creates a “villain.” Test the effect with neutral footage and different cuts.
Continuity is a contract, not nature / 连续性是一种契约,不是自然: The 180° and 30° conventions help a viewer build a stable mental map. A filmmaker may violate that map to create collision, estrangement, subjectivity, comedy, or a new spatial logic—provided the result is legible enough for the intended effect.180 度与 30 度惯例帮助观众建立稳定的心理地图。

06Interview, Multicam & Mobile /

The camera may be a phone; the standards for attention and sound do not change.

1. Interview frame /

English
  • Place the camera close to the interviewer so the look stays near lens.
  • The contributor looks at the interviewer, not normally into the lens.
  • Use a background that adds context without growing objects from the head.
  • Prioritize clean sound and sharp eyes.
  • Record a wide environmental portrait, hands, listening shots, entrance, exit, and relevant activity.

2. BBC-style mobile bracing /

A practical self-shooting posture: brace the left hand under the right armpit or upper arm, support the right elbow, hold the phone with the right hand, keep shoulders relaxed, and lock the frame. Clean the lens first. This is one useful brace—not the only correct posture.

3. Multicam / 多机位

English

Cutting words out of a single locked interview causes the face and body to jump. A second camera more than about 30 degrees away—and preferably with a different shot size—lets the editor hide the time removal as a viewpoint change.

Do not place two cameras at almost the same angle. Keep both on the same side of the 180-degree line unless crossing is intentional.

4. Phone production kit /

Camera / 画面

Modern phones can produce excellent images. A manual camera app such as Blackmagic Camera provides direct controls for frame rate, shutter, white balance, ISO, focus, guides, metadata, and supported audio inputs. Device features vary.

Two-track thinking /

Record a primary close microphone plus a backup: camera scratch track, safety channel, or a second phone near the speaker. Monitor through headphones whenever possible.

Sync / 同步

At the start of each take, state scene/take information and clap once in view of every camera. The spike aligns picture and sound.

Lock the variables /

Avoid uncontrolled auto exposure, auto white balance, and focus hunting during a shot. Consistency usually cuts better than momentary perfection.

Sound carries continuity, space, evidence, and anticipation.

Production sound /
Dialogue and environment recorded during filming.
Nat sound / 自然声
Footsteps, machines, doors, traffic, tools, breath, applause.
Room tone /
The “quiet” sound of a location, used to smooth dialogue edits.
Wild sound / 单录声
Location sound recorded without synchronized picture.
Dialogue rerecorded while matching the performance.
Foley / 拟音
Performed effects synchronized to picture, such as footsteps and clothing.

J-cut and L-cut / J Cut 与 L Cut

VIDEO
Scene A / 场景 A
Scene B / 场景 B
AUDIO
Sound A
Sound B begins early → J-cut
English

J-cut: sound from the next shot or scene begins before its image. It primes attention, creates anticipation, and often makes transitions feel motivated.

L-cut: sound from the outgoing shot continues after the picture changes. It lets us watch a listener, consequence, memory, or evidence while preserving the speaker’s thought.

The J-cut does not work because lightning arrives before thunder; that physical example is picture-first, sound-later. J-cuts work because an incoming sound can orient curiosity before the visual reveal. Cutting a picture slightly before a musical beat is a separate anticipation technique.

“Always J-cut” is useful as a classroom bias: ask whether the next sound can lead. It is not an absolute command.

Documentary editing heuristic /

Four sound–image relationships /

Synchronization / 同步

Sound confirms visible cause: lips, impact, machine, footstep.

Bridge / 桥接

J-cuts, L-cuts, ambience, or music connect spaces and times.

J/L Cut、

Counterpoint / 对位

Sound and image disagree, creating irony, dread, distance, or a second meaning.

Off-screen field /

Unseen sound expands the world, directs a look, or withholds a source for suspense.

Sound is not polish / 声音不是最后抛光: Sound can motivate the cut, redirect attention, establish geography, compress time, conceal a picture edit, and carry subjectivity. Design it while structuring the scene, not only after picture lock.

Remove what weakens the experience; arrange what remains into meaning.

0. What motivates a cut? /

New informationEmotion & storyMovement & formTiming
  1. Information / 信息:the next shot tells us something worth learning.
  2. Emotion and performance / 情感与表演:the audience needs a face, gesture, absence, or point of view.
  3. Motivation / 动机:a look, sound, movement, question, or dramatic shift calls for another image.
  4. Composition and eye trace / 构图与视线:attention can travel cleanly—or collide deliberately.
  5. Movement / 运动:match, interrupt, complete, repeat, or redirect energy.
  6. Time / 时间:continue, compress, expand, repeat, or reorder an event.
  7. Space and sound / 空间与声音:preserve geography, redefine it, or let sound bridge the break.
A technically smooth cut with no new information or emotional purpose is merely smooth. A rough cut with a powerful reason may be exactly right.

1. Two sculpting metaphors /

Clay /

Build from small chosen pieces: shot by shot, sound by sound. Associated metaphorically with upright Moviola work, where the editor handles short pieces closely.

Marble /

Begin with a large assembly or long take, then remove everything that does not belong. Associated metaphorically with viewing larger passages on a flatbed such as a Steenbeck.

These are teaching metaphors, not claims that a particular machine forces one creative method.

2. Continuity editing vs. visible montage /

English

Classical Hollywood continuity: preserve action, eyeline, screen direction, performance, and geography so attention stays on the story. Cut on matched action is a classic method because movement can hide the seam.

Soviet montage tradition: the collision between images is allowed—even encouraged—to be felt. Meaning is created by juxtaposition, contrast, rhythm, and intellectual association.

3. Cut on matched action /

Begin an action in the master and complete it in a closer angle. Match body position and motion phase. The viewer follows the action instead of inspecting the cut.

4. Nodal cut /

English

Walter Murch contrasts conventional matching-action cuts with a “nodal” approach: cut when the next action or idea has become inevitable, often just before full exertion. The new shot then receives the complete expressive action instead of slicing through its most interesting phase.

Example: cut while the fighter gathers force; let the strike play as a complete movement. This is a preference and expressive tool, not a ban on cutting during action.

中文

Walter Murch

5. Kuleshov effect and reaction /

English

A neutral face followed by food, a coffin, or a child can be read as hunger, grief, or tenderness. The surrounding shots cause the audience to assign emotion and intention. The basic motivation is powerful: when someone looks, the audience wants to know what they see.

Reaction shots create empathy because viewers read the event through another human face. But a reaction borrowed from another moment can misrepresent chronology and meaning—especially in factual work.

Reaction Shot

Overused reactions become emotional punctuation on every sentence. If every moment is “shocking,” no moment is.

6. Hidden wipe and occlusion /

English

When a person, wall, vehicle, whip pan, or dark object fills the frame, a cut can be hidden near maximum coverage—the visual equivalent of wiping through the middle. Match direction, speed, color, and sound to sell the transition.

7. When to cut dialogue /

On the speaker /

Use when delivery, hesitation, concealment, or the end of a thought matters.

On the listener /

Use when reception and consequence matter more than the words.

Hold after the line /

A longer hold may suggest thought, threat, doubt, shame, or control. It can make a character feel darker—but only in context.

Cut immediately /

Can make exchange feel efficient and responsive, or deny us access to the speaker’s aftermath.

8. Selecting with a controller /

IN OUT INSERT On tools such as the Blackmagic Design Speed Editor, mark the useful range, then insert or append it into the sequence. The creative habit matters more than the hardware: choose a precise beginning and end before dropping material into the timeline.在 Blackmagic Design Speed Editor 等工具上,先用 IN / OUT 标出有效范围,再 INSERT 或追加到时间线。

Rhythm is not “cut fast.” It is shaped movement, energy, expectation, tension, and release.

Working definition: time, movement, and energy shaped through timing, pacing, and trajectory phrasing to create cycles of tension and release.

Adapted from Karen Pearlman, Cutting Rhythms

Timing / 时机

The exact moment an event, gesture, sound, or cut occurs.

Pacing / 速率

The rate and density of events, not simply average shot length.

Trajectory phrasing /

How takes and shots join into a continuous impression of intention, stress, direction, and release.

Pulse & phrasing /

Repeated expectation plus meaningful variation: setup, continuation, accent, pause, completion.

Three rhythms to listen for / 三种需要“听见”的节奏

Where does energy gather, travel, strike, or settle?
When does the inner state actually change?
How frequently must significant change occur?
Cutting on every beat often flattens rhythm into counting. Try anticipation, delay, syncopation, held shots, and accents that come from performance rather than the soundtrack.
“Let it breathe” / “让它呼吸”: A pause is not empty if it allows comprehension, suspense, embarrassment, grief, or reorientation. But a pause without active audience work may simply be dead time.

08BContinuity, Montage & Discontinuity /

Film history offers competing grammars, not one ladder from wrong to right.

Continuity / 连续性

Cuts serve lucid action, stable geography, performance, and an apparently uninterrupted world.

Constructive editing /

Partial views are assembled so the audience constructs a whole space or event.

Collision /

Shots conflict in content, scale, direction, tone, or idea to generate a third meaning.

Linkage / 联结

Graphic, thematic, sonic, or associative similarities create flow across discontinuous spaces.

Discontinuity /

Jump cuts, mismatches, repetition, ellipsis, and temporal fractures make construction visible.

Long take & staging /

Meaning may be organized inside a shot through blocking, focus, camera movement, and off-screen space rather than frequent cutting.

Eisenstein’s montage categories /

  1. Metric / 度量:cut by measured length.
  2. Rhythmic / 节奏:cut in relation to movement inside the image.
  3. Tonal / 调性:organize dominant emotional or visual tone.
  4. Overtonal / 复调:combine metric, rhythmic, and tonal effects.
  5. Intellectual / 理性:juxtapose concepts to produce an argument.
Better than “Hollywood hides; Soviet shows” / 不止是“好莱坞隐藏、苏联显露”: That contrast is useful for a first lesson but historically incomplete. Classical films can make cuts emphatic; montage films can create smooth propulsion; documentary, television, modernism, and digital media continuously hybridize the two.

09Walter Murch /

Emotion first. Story second. Rhythm third.

Rule of Six / 六原则

Emotion / 情感
51%
Story / 故事
23%
Rhythm / 节奏
10%
Eye trace /
7%
2D screen plane /
5%
3D space /
4%
English
  1. Emotion: Is the cut true to how the audience should feel?
  2. Story: Does it advance or clarify what matters?
  3. Rhythm: Does it occur at the right living pulse?
  4. Eye trace: Does attention land where the next shot needs it?
  5. 2D plane: Do graphic and directional relationships work?
  6. 3D space: Is physical geography coherent?

The percentages express hierarchy, not arithmetic. If perfect continuity damages the best emotional performance, emotion may win.

中文

Blink and the cut /

English

In In the Blink of an Eye, Murch connects blinking with the mind’s division of thought and perception. A blink may signal that a unit of information has been received or an internal thought has shifted. This is a way to observe human rhythm—not a mechanical command to cut at every blink.

Target practice /

Play the scene at normal speed. Pause exactly where you feel the cut. Reset and repeat without looking at the previous mark. If your choices cluster around the same frame, you have found a strong rhythmic node. When the cut is right, the audience often stops noticing the cut and experiences only the change.

Nodality: cut at a thought-branch /

English

In Murch’s later writing, a successful cut resembles a grafting node where the audience’s thought and emotion can flow into a new branch. This makes nodality broader than “cut before exertion.” The node may be a completed thought, a shift of attention, an inevitability, a question, or a new emotional direction.

Repeated “target practice” can reveal a robust preference. Alternate performances, sound treatments, and scene purposes may still shift the best frame. Precision matters; dogma does not.

Moviola, Steenbeck, and the history of touch / Moviola、Steenbeck

English

The documentary Her Name Was Moviola uses Walter Murch and a reconstructed film-editing room to demonstrate how picture and magnetic sound were synchronized, handled, marked, cut, and reviewed. Use it to discuss how physical tools shape attention, patience, and memory—even when the same principles move into digital systems.

Radio cut /

English

Build a comprehensible version using interview bites, narration, and essential natural sound. Then add images that supply evidence, process, place, contradiction, and emotion. If the pictures merely duplicate every spoken noun, the piece becomes illustrated radio rather than visual reporting.

A radio cut is useful for testing argument and clarity, but it can overprivilege language. Verité scenes, silence, faces, duration, landscape, and contradiction may carry meanings that cannot be planned as transcript alone.

13Class Exercises /

Learn by making controlled variations.

Five shots, no dialogue /

30-degree interview / 30 度采访

Record two phone angles and a separate close audio track. Remove one sentence and hide the edit by changing cameras.

Murch target practice / Murch 打靶

Play a scene at normal speed and mark the felt cut five times. Compare the cluster, then explain it through emotion, story, and rhythm.

Convention vs. choice /

Cut one scene for invisible continuity, then recut it using collision, ellipsis, or long-take staging. Write what each version makes the audience notice.

Slide claim audit /

Choose one strong maxim from the MAST slides. Find support, counterexample, and boundary conditions in at least two books.

  • Instructor-supplied Wikipedia HTML excerpt. The “Cinematic techniques” and “Film editing” navboxes were used as a breadth checklist—not as a final authority. Overlapping or misplaced categories were corrected in the atlas; for example, tilt is movement, crane/jib describe support plus movement, and bullet time is generally a hybrid capture/post process. The pasted B-roll references also point back to Bowen & Thompson, production textbooks, and postproduction references.

What changed from Version 1? /
  • Added source-status labels and an explicit audit of course maxims.
  • Added Mackendrick, Pearlman, Hullfish, Bricca, Burch, Reisz/Millar, Dancyger, Bowen, Russin/Downs, McKee, and Murch’s later writing to the conceptual backbone.
  • Expanded story units, shot design, sound-image relations, rhythm, montage/discontinuity, documentary modes, and editorial organization.
  • Reframed deterministic claims about villains, J-cuts, close-ups, camera movement, nodal cutting, and unique cut frames.
Workshop sayings circulate with changing wording. “Wow–Pirate–Star–Arc–Conclusion” and “Always J-cut” remain identified as course heuristics from the MAST notes. Five-Shot practice is associated here with Rosenblum and BBC training. Rule of Six and nodality are associated with Murch. Each is useful only when its scope is made explicit. “Wow–Pirate–Star–Arc–Conclusion”和“Always J-cut”仍被标为 MAST 课堂经验法;Five-Shot 与 Rosenblum 及 BBC 培训相关;Rule of Six 与 Nodality 归于 Murch。
